A watch is not that just to show you the time and sometimes the day, calendar date, month and year. In past, they often took the form of pocket watches, which today are wrist worn. In present use, watch is actually a contraction of wristwatch, a most popular style of timekeeping device worn on wrist.
Mobile telephones, which have become ubiquitous today, are meant not only for the affluent but for the whole. When not in use, it has become common to rely on them for time keeping, effectively making the Mobile phone serve the function of a watch and that is how Mobile telephones become pocket watches too.
How Watches Come into Existence?
A wristwatch, fixed firmly with a watchstrap or watchband are often made up of leather or metal. Invented by Patek Philippe in 19th century, initially was considered a woman’s fashion accessory. It was not until the beginning of the 20th century when the Brazilian inventor Alberto Santos-Dumont, who had difficulty checking the time while in his first aircraft, asked his friend Louis Cartier for a watch. Cartier gave him a leather-band wristwatch which Dumont had with him for longtime. Cartier being a popular figure in Paris was soon able to sell these wristwatches to other men.
During the First World War, army officers discovered the far more convenience of wristwatches in battleground situations. Later, demobilized European and American officers kept back their wristwatches, thus popularizing it amongst the western civilian culture. The trend has then spread to other parts of the world, wherever accurate and convenient time references were required.
Straps Vs Bracelets
Watchbands in form of watchstraps and bracelets are of many types. Some people prefer the comfort of a leather strap while others like the durability and style of a metal bracelet. Some others believe the hybrid offers of durability and comfort of a rubber strap. At end of the day, it simply comes down to your first choice, to select one for your watch. Let us have a look on pros and cons of straps and bracelets.
Leather straps can be incredibly comfortable for you. You can get a nice alligator strap if you want to dress up your watch or a Kodiak strap if you want a more robust look on your watch. Anyway, if you have daily practice of wearing your watch, you have to go through a new strap in about a year before you have to replace it. In such case, a buckle can add significant life to your leather strap as it eliminates the tugging and pulling aspect of taking your watch off and putting it back on your wrist. Moreover, heavy dampness can wash out all the natural oils from your watchstrap and to preserve the strap, get the moisture off with a soft cloth regularly. Another way to preserve your strap is not wearing it tightly. Always leave enough space so that you can place your little finger between the watchstrap and your wrist coat. This helps air circulation and lets moisture evaporate away more effectively.
Metal bracelets are great for folks who prefer not to worry about their watchbands for years of time, as they are most durable. Over the years of usage, the joins will start to loosen and give way, pushing you to replace your bracelet. You can expect a steel, platinum, or titanium bracelet to last for 15 – 20 years and a gold bracelet for only about half of that because of its softer nature. Over time your do need to clean your bracelet and occasionally, clean your bracelet by gently brushing it up using warm soapy water. Rinse and dry it with a soft cloth then.
Rubber straps are great because they give you the comfort of a leather strap and are cheap comparing to leather and metallic bands. However, rubber straps are not as durable as metal straps, but they tend to last longer then leather straps. The disadvantage of rubber straps is that they are not as versatile as leather straps and steel bracelets. You will find yourself hard pressed on wearing rubber strap watch. Rubber straps too need maintenance to some extent as dampness over start to deteriorate it if you do not clean it regularly.
There are few other types of watchstraps out there, especially made for women and come with synthetic or sink bracelets. These are very delicate straps and do not agree with salt, perspiration, or water of any kind. Dampness over them can stain and take away the straps luster away quickly if they are not looked after strictly.
Choose for Your Comfort
The comfort with most wristwatches is that they enable you to use different strap/bracelet combinations. This allows you to dress up your watches to look different from its earlier appearance. It so makes you to feel like you got a new watch after swapping out a bracelet with a strap on it.
So, before choosing one, always keep in mind, which best suit your general living or work conditions. Folks who prefer to keep themselves well dressed can have blend of both, stapes and bracelets for their watches. Finally, its all about individual preference, so if you feel strongly about one of the other, go with it.

Wrist watches are a fashion statement for men and go along with the look they choose for themselves. They reflect their personality and show their taste in fashion accessories. The problem is that there are too many wrist watches in the markets and it’s very hard to choose the one that would both serve the purpose of telling time and make a fashion statement at the same time.

The most obvious question while buying a wrist watch would be to first identify the purpose of purchasing the wrist watch. Whether it is to serve as just an occasional fashion accessory that one might wear in parties or is it going to be for casual every day use. There are also watches for some specific purpose for example diving, running and other sports. Some wrist watches feature GPS systems which are useful on journeys in seeking directions to locations.

If one dresses to impress, then buying a plain gold or silver watch would be perfect. They increase the pride and esteem of the individual and make them appealing to others. If one wants to buy watches for parties and special occasions then full gold watches would be perfect as they catch the eye of almost everyone and are bound to keep your wrists the centre of attraction.

Another category of watches are designer watches which are especially for those who want to make a fashion statement by wearing the latest and the most fashionable items on the market. Although they get old very quickly because fashion never stays for long but to those who prefer fashion over everything then such watches are probably the best.

For those who possess a more athletic personality rather than an executive personality then sports watches might be the best for such people. They offer different features which are useful to athletes such as stopwatch, temperature sensors and air pressure sensors. They also feature unique design which suits the needs of the athletes. Diving watches also provide unique features like depth meter and pressure sensor which are useful for underwater diving.

These days, new watches are available which include a mobile phone or a GPS device or other such gadgets. These watches are especially useful for those who want to be “in” on the latest in the tech world. These watches not only have impressive features like camera or walkman feature but they also have stylish looks which make them the more interesting and impressive.

For females, there are watches in the shape of bracelets which make them a piece of jewellery as well as fulfilling the need for a watch. There are some watches available in the markets which have diamonds attached in the dials or the straps which are an ideal for women bent on impressing their friends on the basis of fashion. Although they are incredibly expensive but for those who want style at any cost these are the best among the lot.

In the end it must be said that watches suit one’s personality and preference. Some people like expensive and stylish watches while other want them only for utility therefore there is no general rule as to which watch is the best for all. However one should always buy the thing which satisfies one’s needs whatever they may be.

While we look at wrist watches as a very commonplace accessory now, people usually do not know why it is that we wear the watch, or are supposed to wear it on the left hand. The reason for this can be traced by looking at the history of the wristwatch.

After the mainspring was invented in the 15th century, wrist watches were invented as it was not possible to make these before the invention of the mainspring. Patek Philippe in 1868 invented a portable watch that was intended to be a lady’s bracelet watch. It was thought of as jewellery and was thus “unmanly,” so males did not wear them.

However, in 1904 Cartier was asked by an aviator friend to make a watch that could be used during flights. He invented the Santos wristwatch which was the first wristwatch made for men, and was designed to be practical in use. These became very popular during World War I as officers could use them easily, unlike a pocket watch which was inconvenient.

Since watches were designed to be practical implements to be used while men were working, it made sense to design them to be worn on the left hand, as most people are right handed, so that it would be easy to both hold a weapon and look at the time at the same time.

Furthermore, since early wristwatches had to be wound, they were worn on the left hand with the winding knob facing outwards so that the person wearing it could easily wind it up using their right hand, and not have to face the inconvenience of having to use the wrong hand to wind it up.

Another reason for wearing wristwatches on the left hand is that the watch does not get damaged easily. Since we use our right hand for most actions, if we wore our watches on the right hand we would inevitably end up banging it into things a lot and thus breaking it sooner.

Finally, it is possible that the arm the watch was made for was based simply on the whim of the first inventors of the wristwatch.

Regardless of the reason, people nowadays wear the watch on whatever hand seems more convenient to them.  Professionals such as construction workers, doctors’ etc wear watches on left hand, while many other people choose to wear the watch on the right hand. Of course, left-handed people now wear watches on the right hand since it is more convenient for them.

Since, there is now “right” arm to wear the watch on; they are now made so that they can be worn on either warm. Modern wristwatches do not need to be wound, thus making it possible to wear them on whichever arm is more convenient for the owner of the watch, regardless of what history may have to say on the topic.
