Watches for Men – Get the Right One
The thing is despite almost all men owning a watch most of us don’t know what to look for. There are millions of ads showing watches for men out there (and you’ll find a few on this site), but are the technical jargon and buzzwords that watch manufacturers like to list in their ads really useful?
We’ll see. Here is the BS free guide to shopping for a mens watch, and don’t forget to check out our Invicta Watch Review :
When you spend above $200, your watch won’t tell better time.
High end watch manufacturers don’t want you to know this, but a $100 watch will tell the time as well as a $1,000 watch.
So when you spend more than a couple of hundred bucks you’re not getting extra accuracy. Instead you’re paying the extra for things like jewelry, high grade metals, expensive designers or technology (such as in high-end sports watches). The exception here is atomic watches, which do deliver superior accuracy. But this feature can be included on a really cheap watch or a really expensive watch.
High End Watches Are Profitable Investments – For Some
Higher end watches can have good resell values but as a general rule don’t expect to do well on reselling a watch unless you do a lot of very careful research and select the right model.
We say buy what you will enjoy, not on what you think it will be worth later.
Don’t stress about the insides (unless you really want to)
Here are some of the things that watches can come with :
- High grade quartz
- Digital quartz
- Analog quartz
- Chronometer-grade mechanical
- Non-chronometer grade mechanical
- COSC certification
- Chronometer rating.
The good news? Unless you already know about these, want unbelievable accuracy or are super curious, don’t let these influence your decision.
So, what do you look for then?
Looks – Don’t think you’re being shallow by considering this to be important. It is perhaps the most important feature of any watch. We are visual creatures. Life is there to be enjoyed.
Wear something you get a kick out of wearing.
Features – One of the great things we love about watches is that there is such a breathtaking array of cool features to choose from. Stopwatch, calendar, waterproof, GPS, shockproof, timer are just some available features. Then there is the metals that are used. Get a good idea of want you want to start with, but open your mind to getting features you might not previously have considered.
Quality – How easily will the watch scratch? Will it last decades if needed? What is it made of?
What will the watch say about you? Will the watch show you as being a successful professional or sportsman?
Brand – Watch brands and their reputations are good general indicators of how good a watch is.
One last thing. You should own more than one watch. Women will notice your watch and whether it matches what you are wearing. A dive watch with a suit or a dress watch with a wetsuit are usually not great combinations. Don’t make this mistake and make sure you have the right watch to match what you are doing.
The other great thing about watches is that they age well, a man should build up a nice collection over time. Get a good enough quality one and you can even hand it down as an heirloom (hopefully not in the style of Bruce Willis character from Pulp Fiction)
